Let’s start with what “En‑💩‑tification” means. It’s when a product launches with shiny features, you buy it, and then—poof!—some of those features vanish with a software update or vague “change in policy.” Imagine buying a car with Bluetooth, only for the dealer to say next month, “Yeah, we’re disabling that. Sorry, not sorry.” One big case: Samsung’s Galaxy watch series. For years, they’ve been advertising blood pressure monitoring. Sounds great, right? Except it only works in a handful of regions (think: parts of South Korea and maybe Guam). In the U.S.? Nope. After nearly a decade, that feature is still waiting on “approval,” yet it’s still in the sales pitch. That’s like selling you a plane and saying, “It flies—just not here.” Then there’s the Ray‑Ban Meta smart glasses. The first generation could live‑stream video straight from the frames. The Gen 2 model (with faster chips and better audio) proudly claims to keep all the Gen 1 features—except that live‑stream button is gone. No warning, just buried fine print. It’s hard not to feel like the customer version of a magician’s assistant—watch closely, and the feature disappears. And it’s not just gadgets. Even service platforms are at it. I’ve seen delivery apps charge for orders that never arrive, deny refunds, and say “case closed.” When accountability vanishes, “customer service” starts feeling more like customer silence. Why it matters: Every time we shrug and buy again, we teach companies that pulling features is fine.
